I attended a wonderful conference today at Sunrise Hospital Medical Center, Las Vegas, NV. The Social and Emotional Developmental Issues Conference was sponsored by the hospital and the presenters were: Dr. Johanna Fricke, Dr. Colleen Morris, Dr. Julie Beasley, Dr. Joe Kithas and Skip Jourdan who spoke about financial planning for children with special needs.
I found several statistics very interesting and I want to share them with you.
Did you know that 60-80% of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are mentally retarded?
Did you know that 40-60% of children with ASD develop seizures?
Did you know recurrence of ASD in a family is 6% if one child has ASD?
Did you know 15% of children with Fragile X also have autism?
Did you know 50% of child with ASD are non-verbal?
Did you know that your pediatrician is legally obligated to screen all children for ASD? (There are several simple/quick screening protocols.)
This is my favorite of all of the statistics!
Did you know that 87% of the time that a parent has a concern about their child’s development ~ THEY ARE RIGHT. You go, parents! You know your child the best and now statistics prove it.
On the way home today, I saw a homeless guy….holding a sign ” why lie, need beer”….I beeped my horn, he came over and I gave him one of the bags , you told me about. He said…God bless, then I saw him go to the side of the road and start eating the stuff…it made me feel so good!!!!!! It almost feels selfish, cause it feels so good, huh?
Thank you Kathie!

The Cushing’s Foundation is teaming up with the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) in promoting Rare Disease Day on Feb. 28th. Cushing’s disease is one of those rare conditions that needs attention and public exposure. Perhaps many diseases are not so rare as they are only unidentified or misdiagnosed (this happens often with Cushing’s). I am living proof that an early diagnosis and treatment is necessary in saving lives. If you have not already done so, go to the CSRF site on this blog and take a look at the characteristics/symptoms of Cushing’s disease. It could save your life. Also, read more about Rare Disease Day on the CSRF website.
I presented a training session at Litl’ Scholar on “Developmental Speech/Language Skills” and they presented me with 93 pairs of socks ~~ men, womens and childrens Hip-Hip Horray for you. Feet will be warm thanks to your act of kindness. Be sure to visit KINDNESS at the top of the page to see how you, too, can become a part of this great way of giving.
