Top Ten Illustrated Children’s Books of 2011

If it’s written in the New York Times, it must be so.

Have YOU read these to your child?

The Book Review’s 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books for 2011, in alphabetical order, are: “Along a Long Road,” written and illustrated by Frank Viva (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers); “A Ball for Daisy,” written and illustrated by Chris Raschka (Schwartz & Wade); “Brother Sun, Sister Moon: Saint Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures,” written by Katherine Paterson, illustrated by Pamela Dalton (Chronicle Books); “Grandpa Green,” written and illustrated by Lane Smith (Roaring Brook Press); “Ice,” written and illustrated by Arthur Geisert (Enchanted Lion Books); “I Want My Hat Back,” written and illustrated by Jon Klassen (Candlewick Press); “Me … Jane,” written and illustrated by Patrick McDonnell (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers); “Migrant,” written by Maxine Trottier, illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault (Groundwood Books); “A Nation’s Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis,” written by Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Kadir Nelson (Dial); and “A New Year’s Reunion,” written by Yu Li-Qiong, illustrated by Zhu Cheng-Liang (Candlewick Press). Next year, The New York Times Best Illustrated awards will celebrate its 60th anniversary.

There is no better language learning that reading to and with your child.

The best predictor of school outcome is how much a child reads and is read to at HOME.

Honor Veteran’s Day 11-11-11

Honoring all Veterans today. On this panel, 04E – Line 3 of The Wall in Washington D.C. is the name of LCPL – E3 Marine Corp – Larry Dean Borschel, from my hometown of Iowa Falls, IA, who gave his last full measure of devotion in South Vietnam on Dec. 9, 1965. The Vet. is John Roberts from PA who made the encased flag for friends whose names are etched next to Larry’s. The letter is from a class of sixth-grade students from Omaha, NE. I corresponded with them. My family was recently there. My Humpty Dumpty was there also and left the only American flag he has ever left on his travels. Today, 11-11-11 is a day of rememberance, rededication, and honor.

Meet and Greet with Senator Harry Reid in Washington D.C.

Our recent trip to Washington D.C. started with a “Welcome to Washington” breakfast in our nation’s capitol. We were greeted in the Lyndon B. Johnson room by Senator Harry Reid of Nevada and several members of his staff. If you are from Nevada, Senator Reid holds a “Welcome to Washington” every Thursday that the Senate is in session. This is followed by a tour of the U.S. Capitol.

Thank you Senator Harry Reid of Nevada

Other state senators/represenatives hold similar greetings.

Go to the name of your senator/represenative and plan ahead.

Top Ten Things (and more) to do in Las Vegas

Here is what Elaine Sosa Labalme says in her blog Sally’s Place about the Top Ten Things to do in Vegas. I happen to agree so I thought I’d pass them on to YOU. Even though I live in Las Vegas, I haven’t tried all of them out but I just might do so now.

  1. City Center – new, modern, and huge
  2. Wynn Las Vegas – where both my mother and son work
  3. Colosseum at Caesars Palace – always great entertainment like Celine Dion or Rod Stewart
  4. The Pool at the Mirage Hotel – never swam there but it is beautiful
  5. The Canyon Ranch SpaClub at the Venetian – never experienced the spa since my son works at the Wynn Spa but the Venetian is simply fab
  6. The Strip – one of a kind on the planet
  7. Gaming Classes at the Las Vegas Hilton – I don’t know about the classes but I just heard that their lunch buffet is only $5.00 every Wednesday
  8. Dinner at Emeril’s – been there, done that and expect to drop some $
  9. Flip it – a big oversized slot machine in several casinos
  10. Stratosphere Tower – great view of the whole Vegas Valley from a-top and wild rides t-boot

Kathie’s personal picks:

  1. Fountains at the Bellagio – they dance to music
  2. UNLV – stroll around the university and the Thomas and Mac Center
  3. Downtown – overhead canopy that displays a spectacular show every night
  4. Neon Boneyard – a new place for Old Vegas signs
  5. Hoover Dam – in a league all its own

You see, there is sooooooo much to see in my city. It’s more than lights and dust. It’s more than showgirls and shows. My family has lived here for 25 years now and its our home. Come visit and find out what Las Vegas is really about.

Oops, I about forgot to mention one of the most popular tourist places in Las Vegas right now, As Seen on TV, The Gold and Silver Pawn Shop – home of Pawn Stars. It’s a hoot not to be missed.
